2017: outfits of the year

First of all, I should acknowledge and welcome my new website – hello, new site! I hope you like what I’ve done with the place. I’ve hopefully made it a lot easier to browse my posts. I’ve finally said goodbye to Blogger and hello WordPress – and BOY is it a good thing. Having been thwarted commenting on someone else’s Blogger blog yesterday (Porcelina, not sure if you got that again!!), I was forcibly reminded of why I made this move in the first place – Blogger is so limited and clunky. It’s also at Google’s mercy, whereas now I’m self-hosting meaning for the first time this site is truly mine! If you’re wondering if I’m a secret web-building genius, I’m not, and I can recommend my friend Terry if any of you want to make the move yourselves, or set up a new site in the best possible way from the start (so shout if you want to be put in touch). Terry is the reason that so far – touch wood – I don’t think I’ve had any problems to iron out, hurrah!

Anyway, today is about a look back as the year draws to a close. I always look forward to writing these ‘outfit of the year’ posts because it’s the only time I really stop to look back at all of the pictures I’ve taken. Which is a bit mad – they take so much effort and I spend so much time editing the posts, just to move on the minute they’re up! But, such is the blogger life – you’re thinking of spring outfits when it’s 2 degrees out!

Usually, I try to theme my round-ups, maybe into seasons, maybe into months, but it didn’t work out that well this time because I snapped far more spring/summer looks than autumn/winter. This doesn’t hugely surprise me, I’ve always preferred summer clothing. So I’m just going to throw a bunch of favourites at you – and hope you agree ๐Ÿ˜€

Vintage style outfit with Collectif cape

I just love this look because it had a cape, if I’m honest. A cape that’s actually quite hard to pair with anything because it’s pink and patterned, so I was quite pleased when I managed to pull it off!

Voodoo Vixen daisy playsuit

This is may be my favourite outfit of the year, just because of how much I LOVE this playsuit. It’s so flattering and fun to wear when the weather warms up because it’s totally easy and a bit more practical than a dress, especially if said dress needs an underskirt. This playsuit will be with me for many years, I hope!

Collectif mix and match skirt and top set

But don’t get me wrong, this summery set is a favourite too! It’s just a bit harder to wear because of the ol’ side holes. This outfit makes the cut because I just loved the mint and red together and these photos turned out cute – well, the ones where I didn’t have a side-roll from an unflattering pose, that is ๐Ÿ˜‰

Vintage red green and white 50s sundress

What a surprise, red and green together again – and it wasn’t even Christmas! I’ve just realised this outfit has the same bag and shoes as the one above – but if it ain’t broke… This vintage dress was a great addition to my wardrobe last year and I loved it with this sunhat. There’s something about a big floppy sunhat I can’t resist for how they look in photos!

Collectif pineapple print dress

This one partly made it in because I loved shooting here – it was a little garden nursery in the middle of nowhere who had a cute little tropical garden and they let us rock up and take some shots. We bought some thyme for the garden as a small thank you, but Bebo is slowly but surely destroying it branch by branch every visit to the garden! Anyway, this was a super comfy outfit and it just looks so pretty together, it became a summer favourite and had an outing on honeymoon.

Esther Williams 50s bikini

Ok if the last one was partly location this was maybe ALL location because I’m on a beach in Mauritius on honeymoon here! But I also loved putting these hair flowers with this stunning bikini and the shots came out so amazingly I almost wept – I wasn’t expecting bikini shots to go as well as these did! My first bikini post and hey it could be my last given I’m not going to be on a tropical beach again any time soon, so it kind of had to make it into this round-up.

Hell Bunny pinafore dress

I love this pinafore and it turned out most of you did too as a pic of me wearing this outfit was one of my most-liked Instagram posts this year. Unfortunately, Bebo has managed to pull a thread in the skirt in his enthusiastic ‘mouthing’ (we’re supposed to call it that because he’s not ‘biting’ as such, being a baby without all his teeth, but for something that isn’t biting he’s managed to ruin two dresses and my favourite PJ bottoms regardless). It’s nice to remember the dress in its full glory!

Hearts and Roses London vintage style coat

This is definitely my favourite winter ‘outfit’, but it feels a bit of a cheat because it’s really all about this coat. Another big Instagram hit, but who can blame you all – it’s a stunner. Fun fact about this set of photos: it was actually taken on one of the hottest days of the year long before winter, as I had to snap before the honeymoon so the pics could go up when I got back and timing just worked out that way. The glamorous, sweaty blogger life, eh?

Lindy Bop plaid skirt outfit

And we’re already at the end! Another popular outfit on Instagram, and was one of those I wasn’t bouncing for joy about when I put it together but it looked great in the photos. It felt quite plain as outfits go, but when I saw the pictures I realised it was actually better than it looked in my head.

And that’s another year of outfits done! My new blog layout makes it very easy to find all of my outfit posts here. But if you want to see an overview, I’ve done past round-ups:ย 2016ย | 2015 | 2014

All in all, I can’t complain with how 2017 has treated B or I. We got married on a perfect day in June, my job became something I’m even happier with (I now work on fashion books – I mean, what could be better than that??) and B just last week got his dream job. We ended the year with Bebo, who is the best little puppy in the world. Next year, lots more exciting things are already lining up, not least one of my best friend’s weddings in May. Everyone is healthy, too, which feels like the best gift of all. I feel like it’s been a trend to diss on 2017, but it’s been a good year for me so I’m not gonna! Hope everyone has a wonderful start to the new year.

Not super keen on your new feed to be honest. It cuts out after the first paragraph on Feedly instead of seeing the whole post like you used to. I get rid of blogs like that on my feed because I want to quickly read through everyone Iโ€™ve missed out on, not reload an entire blog by having to visit the site! Hope you donโ€™t mind the honest feedback ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sorry to hear that – I think that’s a quirk of WordPress’s rather than my design as such, as I’ve always noticed the same thing happens on Bloglovin for blogs that use WordPress as opposed to Blogger et al… I’ll ask my tech guy but I think there’s not a lot I can do about it. Sorry if I lose you – I knew something like this was bound to happen! I would guess the feature is to help sites like mine with traffic and therefore revenue (not that this is really a problem with mine as it’s hardly a money spinner!!), as it’s driving you to the place where ads etc are…

Happy New Year! What a lovely roundup. I am so pleased to hear that you have good feelings about 2017, and that B landed his dream job – congratulations to him! I mean, a wedding and a puppy are pretty high up there for good things aren’t they?! I hope that 2018 brings even more good things your way.

I like the new site, it’s looking great. I do sigh a bit about blogger’s quirks, but I just don’t have the investment of either time or money to make the switch over to WordPress. Maybe that’s something to add to the huge list of ‘things to do when I’ve finished my PhD’!!

Congrats on ending 2017 on a high – puppy, new job and so on.

And, indeed, congrats on the new blog. I’d never have realised you’d switched if you hadn’t said anything – I’d just have assumed it was a new, nice site design, but not a whole platform change.

I loved strawberry mojito, pina colada and a very pretty pinny (third, fifth and senenth outfit respectively).

I wish I could reproduce it.

Happy New Year! I just did my 2017 roundup and, like you, I love taking the time to look back and reflect. Outfits can bring you instantly back to the way I felt at a certain time. I laughed out loud of your winter coat shoot in the heat (cause yeah, been there.) I love the new blog layout – as a fellow WordPress user, I’ve been super happy with it. Looking forward to new looks this year!
