A wintry Cambridge and a 60s CiCi

Ever wondered what my little corner of the earth looks like in the winter? You’ve come to the right place. Cambridge is one of those cities that looks darn pretty at any time of the year and has a rather lovely quality to it under a cold, grey sky. Which is good, really, cos we’ve sure got a lot of those.
The river Cam

If you’re wondering why the above photo looks so out of focus, it’s because it’s not a photo! It’s been a while since I’ve had a video for you. We can blame B and his strange cycle of hobbies – he’ll be really into something for a while then move onto something else. Then, weeks, months, sometimes over a year later he’ll get into it again. Right now, it’s watching endless anime. Anyway, while in a video phase he might either be shooting on a digital camera or his Super 8 using real film. The problem with the latter being that it takes a while for it to get developed, by which point he might be out of his video phase again… Aaaaand that’s what happened here. And that’s also why the film is a bit out of focus and the colours aren’t true – that’s the fun of Super 8. We love it, but if you want to see my outfit in crisp colour, this ain’t for you!
Walking near King's College
Long-time readers will recognise this outfit (sans the coat), because it did feature before, about a year ago. And yep, we shot this film on authentic Super 8… a year ago. But, if you don’t want to look at this outfit again, hopefully you’ll like the scenery, which is from the very centre of Cambridge. In the above shot, I am walking down an alleyway right next to the famous King’s College, in fact. Oh, and there’s my coat. I’ve worn this coat in a video before, so it’s not news, but it looks great with this outfit ;)PS You don’t need sound for this!

As ever, apologies that I’m not more lively in this video. I genuinely find it excruciating being filmed on my own – for some reason it’s so much worse than being photographed, but I couldn’t tell you why… Believe it or not, I do have a playful side – just not when a camera is pointed at my face.

I love it! Cambridge looks so interesting, I think I was there once for a gig so it was dark and I didn't see anything outside the venue. I would love to take a proper walk around, in daylight! I remember your outfit, tres chic xx

That's a shame, it's worth a look! Definitely the prettiest place I've ever lived in… xx

What a cute little film! Seriously, this looks straight out of the 60s – your style, gorgeous Cambridge, and the Super 8 film. Very Godard!
Also, I love that B is super into anime! Tell him to watch Kill la Kill and Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo and Ghost in the Shell!

We take that as a massive compliment 😀
The anime cycle has been around for a while (since I've known him, it's probably about the 5th time it's come around) so I know he's seen most of the more well-known stuff. He's on the obscure now…

I love this clip!! Great job! Cute outfit too, you are the beret queen! x

I like being filmed better than being photographed. I figure there's less chance of me getting caught from a seriously unflattering angle. I love the colour of the film, it gives it real atmosphere.

Ah see I feel like I can curate photographs to all be on my best angle, but film is everywhere I don't want it to be…!

The only thing more awkward than being photographed has to be being filmed! I think you pulled it off very well however, you look completely natural and don't break the fourth wall. Cambridge looks every bit as beautiful as I expected – and I see what you mean about not being able to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings due to how bustling the city is. I would love to see you and B make more of these in the future, the super 8 look is so dreamy and whimsical, this film had such a Sofia Coppola film feel to it which was absolutely fantastic!

    • February 7, 2017 / 1:42 pm

Yep, it's that busy all the time… and a lot worse in summer during tourist season! I think we will be doing more super 8 again some day – B is looking at buying a new camera that will record the footage digitally when it comes out. Meanwhile we'll continue on fitting these little videos in around the wedding madness, I'm sure 🙂 The next video could very well be the one from the wedding in fact!

    • February 7, 2017 / 1:42 pm

Yes you should! I'll be the one trying to take photos around a million tourists…

Such a fab little video! It feels like it's a 60s/70s publicity film for the town. I'm a bit like you, as soon as there's a camera pointed at me I tend to lose my sense of humour and just feel really awkward.

    • February 7, 2017 / 1:43 pm

I'm glad it's not just me! I'm fine if there's someone else there with me and I have something to do, but when it's just me expected to perform like a monkey… Nope.

So sweet and nostalgic. I love it.

  8. February 6, 2017 / 10:36 am

It looks gorgeous, I know you said audio not necessary but the music was so cute!

I love seeing this movie. I love film. I have two 8 mm cameras I used to play with but from everything I've heard and seen the old 8 mm film is no longer being made so my old obsolete technology is even more obsolete 🙁 This super 8 footage is awesome and your guy's got some great editing skills 🙂

I know nothing about the filming side of this, other than that B sources his films from a specialist company. They do seem to be out there for enthusiasts of the old ways…
