Outfit: back to 1955 (with a special guest)

So, by this point I’ve got a fair few posts in draft and all of them are completely out of order, so now I’m going to take you back to late August when I went to a very special event…
I wonder if anyone’s guessed it? I’m of course talking about when B and I went along to Secret Cinema’s recreation of 50s Hill Valley from Back to the Future for a special screening of the film. It was amazing; we ate in the diner, we went to the Enchantment under the Sea dance, we almost got on a ferris wheel before I remembered I’m terrified of heights… Then we almost got on a chair ride, but I decided I was also terrified of their (pitiful) height (have I ever mentioned before I have horrendous vertigo?!)… They don’t let you take your fancy modern cameras onto the ‘set’ so we picked up disposables while we were there… and when I ever get round to developing those I’ll share any shots that came out ok (assuming some of them had to!).
And as I didn’t take many ‘outfit’ types while we were actually there, as I had more important things to do, like watch B be involved in a 20-minute long improv session including sing-a-long with some of the Peabody’s Farm actors (hilarious, as it’s not like he knew the words OR tune), I made sure I got some snaps before we went. It’s a rare occasion where I was trying to look head-to-toe 50s, rather than borrowing elements, but I also wanted to make sure everything I wore I would wear again – I don’t believe in wasting money on ‘costumes’ (rather, I don’t have the money to waste on costumes). Nor was it necessary in this case!
Basically, one of my biggest motivators for going along was the opportunity it presented to finally buy a petticoat 😉 I also took along a vintage handbag that my mum snapped up at a vintage car show from a little old lady selling off her entire life-long collection. For ridiculously low prices. This bag – £10 – and it was in mint condition right down to the light beige suede lining on the inside. And not a weird smell to be sniffed.

Ribbon: ASOS (out of stock but is just a black ribbon!)
Sunglasses: Collectif @ Aspire Style
Cardigan: Oasis (old)
Top: H&M (similar)
Belt: Marks & Spencer (similar)
Skirt: Hell Bunny @ Rockabilly Pinup
Petticoat (24″): Banned @ Sirens & Starlets
Shoes: Clarks (old)
Handbag: vintage

But wait, I wasn’t the only one dressed up! Welcoming to the blog, for his outfit debut, B! So, another aspect of this whole thing was that you get given characters. I was just a high school student, so not a lot of special attire needed there, but someone got cast as a wrangler. Suddenly, I had a diva on my hands who insisted he wouldn’t go unless he got to wear dungarees… Fortunately for him, we found some that fitted perfectly from an online vintage shop (a bit of a fluke) – and the whole effect turned out relatively dashing, despite the fact he’s basically wearing what I wore when I was about 5 (minus the hat… and the axe).

Shirt: Topman
Dungarees: Rokit
Boots: stolen from his dad
Axe: also stolen from his dad
And in another outfit first for this blog… (slightly sickening) double outfit shots!

And these made the 3rd and 4th photos of ourselves together ever where one of us wasn’t gurning. Which certainly doesn’t include the c.15 I didn’t use here. (I’m not including the Valencia selfies we painstakingly took here, as remember, that happened after 😉 )

So nice story, and you are so stylish couple 🙂

Well, on this occasion we were 😉 x

How adorable! Thank heavens I'm not the only one taking couple shots.

You both did a great job dressing for the part. It sounds like such a fun thing to do.

I wonder if yours took as long to get right as mine did..! It was a really fun experience, totally different to anything else I've ever done. Would recommend!

You are such a cutie! Love these shots. That event sounds like so much fun. I'm not a huge Back to the Future fan (I mean, it's fine, but it's not one of those movies I get obsessed over), but hanging out with everyone decked out in 50s gear, no modern cameras allowed, sounds like great fun. I hope the petticoat is turning out to be a worthwhile investment, it looks great here.
Also, your boyfriend's hot. If you didn't already know. 😛

Well I'm not sure who blushed more, me or B! I read your comment out to him and he hid behind a cushion for the next few minutes, approximately the colour of a tomato 😉 I'm not really 'into' the film either, but boy was I into the experience. I knew it well enough to know what everything was, and that really was enough. I'm kind of excited to see the disposable photos too now… And the petticoat is getting good use, don't you fear!

This is too cute. You look amazing (like always) and your boyfriend looks great too. I love how you said "Suddenly I had a diva on my hands" haha too funny! Great looking couple 🙂

He may have had a helping stylist hand from me, just sayin' … but the dungarees was all his idea!!

I blog out of order, so to speak, all the time, too. I've even pulled on events as old as half a year ago for post ideas. There's really no limits in my books there. If I want to share something, be it from an hour or a decade ago, I will. That's the joy of having, and being in control of, one's own blog after all.

You look sensational, sweet dear! I recognized that gorgeous Hell Bunny skirt instantly and love seeing it on a fellow vintage blogger, not just a model in the stock shots for it. Goodness, you've got me pining for one of my own now (I have two Hell Bunny skirts already and love them to pieces – as I do everything else I own from that brand; they've really become one of my fave repro/vintage inspired lines in the past couple of years).

Big hugs & happy Friday wishes,
    ♥ Jessica

I'm glad I'm not the only one – I've probably got some as old as half a year now that I think about it. I can't actually even remember anymore!

Hell Bunny is one of my favourites too – I've just bought one of their coats for the winter and it's so lovely. Great styles, great quality and they continue to surprise me with what they bring out. x

That event sounds like it was such a blast! You both looked perfect! I think these really are the best outfits you could have worn! So happy that you picked up a pettycoat! I just adore my vintage ones so much! Your skirt is gorgeous!

    • October 25, 2014 / 11:00 am

Thanks – and I'm glad I picked up a petticoat too, just looking for excuses to wear it all the time now 😉

  7. October 25, 2014 / 4:24 am

Wow this outfit is amazing! I would have so much fun wearing this skirt-like you did-spinning around like crazy! But it is also gorgeous with the floral. And the pictures with you two are just so adorable! I could never get my boyfriend to wear anything like that. He literally cringes with the word "overalls".
Also, how did you do your hair? It looks amazing 🙂

My boyfriend would definitely never wear anything like this on a normal day, but as it was for a costume he got really into it! The hair took a lot of practice actually, but in the end it was essentially: backcombing for volume, pulling into a high ponytail and then using heated rollers to create the curls in the tail *afterwards*, which isn't something many people do but it really helped to get a smooth finish 🙂 x

  8. October 25, 2014 / 5:24 pm

Love the outfit and your hair (as always!!). Can't wait see pictures from the event!!! It sounds like it was a super awesome event!!! 😀

    • October 28, 2014 / 1:42 pm

The pictures are coming… I've just had them developed and some of them are awesome! 🙂

    • October 28, 2014 / 1:42 pm

Thanks, I'm not sure how he feels about it as he didn't get a lot of choice in the end..!

  9. October 26, 2014 / 4:18 pm

Well you two are very cute! I have really enjoyed your blog. New follower! Love your hair, it is such a good twist on your usual typical styles,

Thanks 🙂 my hair is seriously just a ponytail with a few curls, but I am a master of making simple things look complicated, turns out 😉

  10. October 27, 2014 / 1:25 am

Ohh I hope you post the shots you took with the disposable camera! The photos of you and your boyfriend are so lovely, you are such a good looking couple 🙂

    • October 28, 2014 / 1:44 pm

They are coming! I have them in my possession now and they're great! And you're so sweet, thank you!! x
