Slytherin into Halloween...

Two years ago I gave you our first Halloween costumes - this super easy Daphne and Fred (from Scooby Doo) couples' costume and now, we're back! And so is B's blonde wig...

Let me introduce you to Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson!

Here's something I don't talk about often - like 80% of the rest of the world, I am a big Harry Potter fan! It's one of the many reasons I work the job I currently do and why Miss Amy May and I get along so well. Amy doesn't understand one thing though - my obsession with Draco Malfoy! And yes, it's true, he's a nasty piece of work in these books (let's not talk about Tom Felton's 'acting' in the films or I might cry), but what can I say? I always thought that deep down there might be some good in him and he was just brought up bad...

I've always been an advocate for Slytherin house because a) it was Snape's house <3 and b) I just think it's where I would have ended up. It would be a toss-up between Ravenclaw and Slytherin, but I think I'm a snake deep down... Pottermore agrees (after a false start where I got one too many animal questions and it put me in Hufflepuff - yeah right!). Slytherins are ambitious, resourceful, self-preserving, determined and clever (usually) - and this resonates with me more than any of the other houses, particularly the ambition part. The funny thing is that B would almost certainly be a Hufflepuff or Gryffindor... but he was quite happy to be a Slytherin for the day for Halloween!

"Does it hurt terribly, Draco?"
"It comes and it goes. Still, I consider myself lucky. If it wasn't for Madam Pomfrey, another minute or two and I could have lost my arm."

Largely, B and I are wearing the same items, with the exception of my scarf and bag. If you look closely at the bag, you'll see it has a Hogwarts crest on it. Did I buy this specially for this costume? Nope, I already had it and use it regularly!! The scarf was from the shop at the Harry Potter studios in the UK. Also worn regularly in the winter, of course.

And I'm not sure if anyone can tell, but B is wearing a heavy layer of foundation with some bronzer contouring going on for that pale and pointy faced look. What a sport! Want to know something hilarious though? It's not a special shade, it's my regular shade! I'm actually having to mix it with a darker one since coming back from the honeymoon, but it was really funny how pasty it looked on B, who isn't exactly tanned.

It's not as well known what Pansy looks like, and different characters in the book describe her as either pug-faced (Harry) or 'pretty' (Rita Skeeter), depending on how much they like her! I liked Pansy's first iteration in the films with a dark bob and fringe, so I dug my trusty bob wig back out. This wig was last seen starring in my 20s flapper outfit!

Given that B and I are constantly being mistaken for a couple much younger than we are (a couple of months ago we were both IDed for a small bottle of cooking wine bought with our weekly shop...), I thought we might as well make the most of our youthful looks by playing school-aged wizards! Happy Halloween from this proud Slytherin (Pottermore also gave me a Bloodhound patronus, so it must be true)!

    1. This is such a nice comment - it's brightened my whole day! We did have fun; there are many outtakes where we're laughing our heads off. I had to be careful not to make direct eye contact with him the whole shoot because if I did it would set me off... That Malfoy sneer...

    2. That Malfoy sneer IS pretty funny... with all due respect, of course! I wouldn't want to be cursed for an innocent comment, just in case those wands work.. ;-P

  3. This was such a good call for your Halloween post, it suits you both to a tee! I'm a Harry Potter fan too, so this particularly pleases me. It must have been so much fun putting these looks together and then acting the part for your photos. Really fantastic job. Very resourceful too, using existing items, like an old school shirt. I got asked for ID the other week, I fear for the last time ever...

Happy Halloween to you both xx

    1. Apologies for half of the post being irrelevant to you, but I'm still happy you could appreciate the costumes :D

  5. It's crazy how unrecognizable you both look in those wigs! You definitely look the part though - and could well pass for a bunch of students, especially with the fact that it's totally not uncommon to have thirty year olds playing teenagers on TV. You look great in the green and it makes me wonder whether the sorting hat also takes into mind the colours that work best for the person...I mean I enjoy wearing both yellow and black, just not together :P

  6. You suit that wig so well!

Pottermore gets everyone's house wrong. It wanted to put me in Ravenclaw, when it's bleedin' obvious I can only be a Hufflepuff. And if your husband was happy to take on the house you chose, sounds like he's a Huffle too...
