Outfit: the 50s style bikini of tropical dreams

I'm back from our magical Mauritian honeymoon! We really needed some time to take it easy after the hard work over the past year for the wedding, so that's exactly what we did. Lots of sunbathing and swimming in a turquoise sea. And lots of eating - superb seafood galore! I'm also a bit of a menace at a well-stocked breakfast buffet - I don't think I had many breakfasts that weren't three courses... Basically, bliss. Mauritius has tourism down to a fine art - which is either a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it, but I have to say it makes things a lot more pleasant when everyone you meet is friendly and hospitable!

Going out to a tropical paradise it was tempting to plan a tonne of outfit shoots for the blog because when would I be somewhere like this again? But, honestly, I just didn't feel like it. So, I stuck to doing two - and this one is extra special because it's in collaboration with For Luna and is my first (and could well be the last!) swimwear look! I'm fortunate that while I know I don't have a model's physique, I've been quite comfortable in my own skin since probably my mid 20s. I feel lucky for the shape I have and that while I watch what I eat, I'm not obsessive about it and still have plenty of treats.

Even so, it wasn't without any trepidation that I signed myself up for a bikini shoot! I'm not toned and I carry weight on my stomach, and I'm bigger than I was when I was younger, naturally. But, I really wanted to do it for myself as a new challenge - and being somewhere this warm and beautiful was a good time to try. The key to this was going to be a darn good bikini, and For Luna's got plenty of those! I knew the range this bikini was from was designed to be flattering and I'm so pleased I've had chance to take this set for a spin because it's fab.

As tempting as it was, I haven't airbrushed my figure and I wasn't holding my stomach in in the below photos. The latter was because I forgot entirely, we were concentrating so hard on the lighting side of things, as usually I would! But the fact is I'm not and I do have a little tummy, but as you'll see from the below side shot you'd hardly know it in these bottoms, they do a great job of holding it in. Honestly, I can't rave about this bikini enough, I felt great in it. Note that I had to size up in the top because I needed the bigger cups, so if you're blessed in that area you might need to do the same.

  1. Welcome back!! These shots are very, very professional. I loved the one on Instagram and was looking forward to seeing more. You can tell that you are wearing that fabulous bikini with confidence galore - and a honeymoon glow too. Radiant. You will LOVE looking back on these shots when you are older.

I am reassured by your comment about the three course buffet breakfast that it's not just me that does that...

Best dressed honeymooner award goes to you!! Xx

    1. And the award for best comment goes to you :D Ha, when there's pancakes cooked on demand, pastries of all varieties, the tastiest porridge, and a woman who'll do eggs in front of you however you want them (including filled omelettes!), I went to town... And yes I put on weight, but all things considered I was shocked it wasn't more!! I'd do it all again ;) xx

  2. You look gorgeous! I love the tropical print on the bikini, and the style is perfectly flattering on you. Mauritius sounds and looks like an absolute dream! What a gorgeous beach - and who could resist a good breakfast buffet?

  3. Like you even NEED an air brush, you look out of this world BEAUTIFUL. These photos have me wanting to buy a new swimsuit and book myself a holiday by the beach - preferably with an all inclusive buffet breakfast too. No really, I understand because that's always the highlight of staying at a nice resort for me too. You're going to have me buying ALL the Alternate Normality flowers, they're the perfect finishing touch for every outfit!

  8. Oh my gosh, you look so dang cute in this bathing suit and umbrella! I love your honesty - though it is not warranted! I've got a belly too, we all do! It's where our organs are! You shouldn't feel the pressure to airbrush or suck in your belly. You look amazing and everyone knows when we're all stripped down, a body's a body's a body and we all have bits and pieces we don't like but psh, whatever, life's too short to care about that stuff! ROCK THAT TWO PIECE, GIRL!!

    1. Completely agree with you - it makes me sad that so many people have huge body hang-ups. And sure, it'd be lovely to have a flat stomach but it's not the way I'm made, so I may as well get over it and worry about something worthwhile instead ;)

  13. You're looking gorgeous! I've been thinking about this bikini range (in red though) for a long time, but I felt like the top was looking weird on the model. On you it looks perfect though, so maybe I will try. I have a tummy too, especially on the bottom but bikini bottoms like these are made for people like us :) And who really cares about someone else's tummy? If you're comfortable in your own skin and body, you shouldn't worry about what everyone else thinks, because very likely they're not paying any attention.
