Outfit: the bachelorette (+ Voodoo Vixen discount code)

It’s very strange to think of myself as someone who is about to get married. Even though planning and prep has taken over my life for nearly the past year and I bring it up every 5 seconds here, it hasn’t really dawned on me that at the end of it I’m going to be going through my own wedding day. That might sound nuts, but honestly it all feels pretty surreal still. My now married bridesmaid said that same feeling never really left her even on the day, so at least I’m not alone! But it is happening, we’re just over two months away now and this weekend is my hen do! We don’t really call these ‘bachelorettes’ in the UK, but equally we don’t have an equivalent word to ‘bachelorette’ to identify the bride of the group, so it’s good for a blog post!
This outfit is one that would look oh-so-appropriate at a bachelorette party and that’s originally how I saw this dress, as the colours lend themselves so well to evening wear. The beautiful embroidery and the shape and neckline of this dress were something I couldn’t pass up. I also really like that it can be worn as a sun dress (it’s a light fabric) too. Anyway, the fit of this dress is a dream and my hat is off to Voodoo Vixen because this is down to two features: 1) elasticated shirring in the back and 2) adjustable straps. Hallelujah! Adjustable straps, the gift from the clothing gods I will always be overjoyed to see! Seriously, repro designers, more of these. It’s so great for helping those of us who aren’t average sized wear niche fashions without expensive tailor trips. Oh and stay tuned as I have a discount code for those awesome adjustable Voodoo Vixen dresses!
So yes, I’m quite a fan of this dress. Will I get to wear it for my hen celebrations though? Well, as it turns out, not for our big night out as I will instead be dressing like a middle-classed Edwardian. Which isn’t because I’m trying to go out of my way to subvert the more traditional hen apparel (even though that does sound like something I’d do for the lols), but because we are going to Secret Cinema as bohemians for their Moulin Rouge themed event! I can’t wait!! My costume is definitely a lot more Mary Poppins than can-can dancer, but hey, I’m totally ok with that. Strange fact about me: as a teen I was obsessed with this film to the extent I watched it virtually daily for a considerable period of time. This is stranger once you know I’m really not that into films and I’m not one for love stories usually. There was something about that world and the use of music that really spoke to me, clearly – and I absolutely can’t wait to be in it! And if there’s a time for love stories in your life it has to be as you’re getting married, right?!

This dress is just amazing, and you so cute 🙂

I think Voodoo Vixen have my favourite new range that's out at the moment – so many gorgeous details on their dresses!

    • April 4, 2017 / 12:46 pm

I hope so, but I've deliberately not looked up anything about it because I want it to be a surprise 😀 For sure, I was all over the soundtrack too – it's pretty epic. And thank you!

You must have had Satine on your mind that day because this outfit makes me think of what a 50s version of her would wear – and it looks spectacular! Moulin Rouge is indeed a fanastic film and I even dyed my hair red because of Satine hahaha…also in my teenage years, so good to know I wasn't the only one obsessed with Moulin Rouge. Maybe it's the rebellious element of the film that's too good to resist, all of those people pushing the boundaries of society? The way you've styled your hair and the flowers together with the dress also reminds me of ballerinas, I saw Carmen a few years ago and the ballerinas wore the same colours and dresses were very similar to this and with black embroidery as well – just way more puffier of course!

    • April 4, 2017 / 12:55 pm

You know, just as I posted it I was thinking it's kind of Moulin Rouge colours in this outfit! I also had red hair around this time… haha glad it wasn't just me! And I love the idea of reminding you of ballerinas – that can only be a compliment 🙂

Wow! Just wow! You in red? YES PLEASE! More! MORE!! You look stunning and I have to admit, this dress has a bit of a Moulin Rouge vibe to it. It may just be appropriate to wear on your Hen night – JUST SAYING!! hehe

I also loved that movie – as a singer and music geek, I loved the scores and the way they used modern music to tell the story. Plus, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor were so good together in that film. AH! SO good.

I can't believe I missed that this dress was Moulin Rouge appropriate in itself – you're quite right that it is! But I have a whole other outfit I have to wear for that and it involves a lilac maxi skirt…

Yes, definitely!! The music is just so clever. I can't wait to see the film come alive 😀

You're an absolute vision! I knew this dress would look amazing on you the moment I saw it (I toyed with the idea of me wearing it for 5 seconds before I realised I was too tall…). I love the way you've styled it too, with the flower and shoes. Maybe a feather in your hair and fishnets would have been a bit much?!

After you're married, do you think you could do some more hair tutorials? I really love the look here, and always like your 'updos' (I'm rubbish at them!!).

Enjoy your hen party, it sounds fun! xx

    • April 6, 2017 / 6:30 am

Aw why can we never have the same things… I dunno I could have gone for a feather 😉

I will ponder hair tutorials. I think my styles tend to look better from a distance and mostly they involve haphazard pinning until it looks right… But I'll try to think if I have anything useful to share! xx

You look so beautiful! This dress is really lovely, and it suits you so well. I love the neckline and the embroidery, and you've accessorized it perfectly. Your bachelorette party sounds like it's going to be so much fun – way cooler (and less predictable) than going to a club, etc.

    • April 6, 2017 / 6:32 am

For sure – all I knew is I wanted to do different and when Secret Cinema teased the next film I knew what it was and I knew it was too perfect for my hen! It wasn't cheap but hey, I didn't want a long hen – just something really memorable and special!

  6. April 4, 2017 / 11:10 pm

You look so amazing, this dress is stunning and it looks so perfect on you! I like that this dress can be dressed up or down too. As always I love your styling and your beautiful hairstyle! I want this dress now x

    • April 6, 2017 / 6:33 am

For sure, it's so light and floaty to wear, I may well revisit how to wear it as a sundress one day! x

  7. April 5, 2017 / 3:52 am

Such a gorgeous dress! That neckline is devine, and hurrah for adjustable straps! I'm not petite, but I am short waisted and have a high bust, making it so hard for dresses to fit me properly. Adjustable straps would be such a help! I wish more brands did them.

    • April 6, 2017 / 6:33 am

Yes exactly! I feel like it's not difficult to add this to dresses with straps and it makes such a difference. I can feel a one woman crusade about adjustable straps coming on…

  8. April 5, 2017 / 4:32 am

I love the lace at the neckline. The contrast of red and black is really striking, and the dress suits you so well!
I hope you have fun at your party! 🙂

This dress is absolutely stunning, I've seen it on a few ladies on instagram and I love it on them too! The black and red is gorgeous and the lacing is beautiful! Loved how you have accessorized it too! xo

  10. April 5, 2017 / 11:16 am

What an awesomely gorgeous dress and it suits you so well. Will you get to wear it for any of the party, even if not the Moulin Rouge night? Have a truly fabulous party! Kx

    • April 6, 2017 / 6:34 am

I've decided to go with something a bit easier to style for our spring weather for our daytime activities, but it's not the end for this dress! And thanks 🙂 x

    Oh my….
    Gosh! red!!!
I love red, (and pink of course).
Anyway, it looks gorgeous on you, the entire ensemble is breathtaking, wow!
Enjoy your hen party 🙂 the Mouling Rouge (red like your dress) theme sounds great to me.
Anyway, try not to stress more about your wedding day, everything will run smoothly, "always look at the bright side of the life" (from the Monty Piton's film, The Life of Brian).

Take care and enjoy it 😉

Thank you and thank you! I don't think I was clear that this is a theme night with tonnes of other people, but honestly it will be much better than if I tried to pull off my own party!

And yes I'm definitely over the worst of the stress now that things are starting to come together and the end is in sight! I'm just someone who wants to organise everything fast and then sit back and wait for the event…

That Secret Cinema event looks fantastic – you have to tell us all how it goes!
