Outfit: her name was Lulu

Sometimes you come across an item of clothing that isn't really like what you normally wear but there's something about it you still rather like. This dress, for me, was one such piece. I almost never wear head-to-toe black clothing (this previous outfit is as close as it gets and, well, I had bright yellow legs). I find black a really boring colour - and quite an overwhelming one when you're petite and pale. But this dress... something about it really caught my attention.

I think it's a combination of two things: 1) the cute red buttons all the way down and 2) the unusual neckline. Couple this with the fact that I had a strong feeling it would be a good length on me and I rather wanted it. I wasn't disappointed when it arrived. And can I just give a round of applause to Hell Bunny for giving this dress adjustable straps? There are hidden buttons in the back and it's genius and I wish all brands did it. In fact, Voodoo Vixen are well on top of adjustable straps this season too and I couldn't be happier. For the petite, it makes such a difference taking off that inch or so you don't need so that the top sits in the right place. Anyway, this aside, this dress is incredibly flattering. I love the length it is on my 5'1" frame and everything is hitting in the right place. It's going in the tropical honeymoon pile (yes, that mythical honeymoon I haven't actually booked), for sure.

One of the good things about black dresses is how easy it is to accessorise them. This one gave me some good cues in the form of the cute embroidery, so it was time to crack out my cherry Westwood heels. I picked these up a while ago secondhand as a bit of a unicorn, but they were waiting for the day I had an embroidered cherry on my clothes to make their debut. And then I found a tree with matching blossom down the road and these photos were born. One of my favourite ever sets, even if I did get the pictures on the side of an extremely busy road and B nearly got run over twice. One must suffer for one's art... Or rather, B must suffer for mine ;)

    1. I think it took a year before this pair came up! They were sold on Depop - that's a good option if it's available in your country as this lady dragon style does come up often there! You won't get for as much as a bargain as on eBay though...

  2. This dress looks gorgeous. The little embellishments at the neckline and the buttons completely lift it from being just an ordinary black dress. And it fits you to perfection too!!

  3. That is so cute! The adjustable straps are a great idea - it'll probably be better for the company too, as they'll get fewer returns.

    1. Definitely, it's such a good idea. I hope all of the brands cotton on! And don't worry I am for sure going to have a honeymoon but we can't easily book until we know what our kind guests might donate to us... Having zero funds without said kind guests!

  5. LOOOOVE this on you!

The way you've accessorized it is wonderful too.

Adjustable straps are great. You are right, everyone should be doing it.

  6. This is lovely, fits you perfectly! Could you please tell me if there is any stretch/give around the bust area? I've been wanting to buy this dress but not sure what size to get, so any advice would be much appreciated :-)

    Thanks,

    Jen

    1. There isn't any stretch, BUT looking at the size guide, like most Hell Bunny pieces I'd say the dress is generous. My 35" bust fits into this XS perfectly. I wouldn't have got away with much bigger, but that's a considerable inch difference on the size guide for the XS... I tend to find I'm always the smallest size in Hell Bunny but that's not the case with other brands usually. I hope that helps!

  7. Someday, SOMEDAY, I will end up in your region (come on, travel gods!) and we will twin - you in this version and me in the older purple version of this dress. It's so cute seeing it in a new colorway! I also love that your buttons are red. In the purple version I have, the dress is black and so are the buttons. I wish they were purple to match the embroidery! oh well! Now I want this dress...

    1. The buttons are definitely a really cute extra! Especially for someone who loves red as much as I do :D and ha, my work here is done!!

  8. You and the dress both look very lovely :) I also like the neckline of that dress and the same one in pink with seashell embroidery on the sides, but the skirt length will be too short my taste, since I'm a lot taller and actually like my skirts 26 and longer. Looks beautiful though and let's hope that one day they'll make similar dresses in longer lengths as well.

    1. Yes it wouldn't have the 'retro' vibe on a tall person because it would probably be above the knee!

  9. Such beautiful photos! Spring personified. You look so lovely. I would wear that dress but know it would be too short on me :( I adore those shoes too, but found I need a half size in those, which they don't do, so I shall admire them on you instead!

Side note: why don't more companies do adjustable shoulder straps?! You're petite and me tall, but we're not aliens, many people are the same. It's easy to shorten straps but much harder to lengthen them incidentally! .

I second Mim's prompt: book a honeymoon!! You will not regret it... xxx

    1. I find with these shoes that there's variations depending on which batch they released in. My newer ones come up smaller than these, which are an older style. Probably half a size smaller, in fact. So maybe all hope is not lost, but the cherry style are probably out!

Don't worry, I am on it with the honeymoon, but until we receive our donation gifts there's not a lot we can actually do!! xx

  10. Yay for another dress that is the perfect length on you! I love that you've styled an unconventional colour like black for spring and yet managed to look so spring appropriate instead of the usual pastel combos we're used to. The black looks fantastic against the white cherry blossoms behind you! This really would be a great outfit to pack for a tropical honeymoon - especially with those beautiful orchid flowers for a holiday vibe :D

    1. I think for my honeymoon I should go full flower and fruit crown ;) You're right, it is common to see pastels with black for spring... I think the red on this dress makes it easy to buck the trend!

  11. I almost certainly couldn't work this dress - gorgeous though it is - but you style it so beautifully. There's something whimsical about it (when did I last use that word?) while still being oh-so-stylish. And the shoes are fabulous for the outfit too! Kx

  12. This is crazy cute on you! The black actually suits you really well, in my opinion, especially with the pops of red, white, and pale pink. I feel like if the dress was any other color, it would be too sweet. As it is, the embroidery and buttons really pop against the black.
These photos are really lovely, by the way. Love the cherry blossoms!
