My best friend's vintage inspired wedding on a budget

Is there anything quite as incredible as seeing one of your best friends get married? That's what I did back in April and it was honestly such a great day and all the more amazing for the fact that so many elements of it were DIY, as the bride worked within with a tight budget. And for the fact it featured a steam train!! It also had some lovely vintage touches, so it's only right I share some photos with you... and stay tuned to the end for the wedding video B made (he did me so proud!).

Vintage inspired wedding - bride and bridesmaid outfits

The bride's dress was one of the elements that wasn't budget, before anyone gets too excited. Having now also done my own trip to a bridal shop, I completely understand why people want to invest in what they're wearing - you're paying for a superior fit, construction and layers and layers and layers of material. One of my favourite things about our looks together is the matching Irregular Choice shoes - aren't they darling?

Irregular Choice Pink Nick of Time Irregular Choice bow shoes

Darling and quite simply the perfect match for my bouquet. You know how much I like matching.

Vintage wedding transport

Also a non-budget option - sorry folks - but mostly because the bride's step-dad's car wasn't ready in time!

Arriving for the wedding via steam train

One of the best entrances to a wedding ever, quite possibly, we travelled in by vintage steam train!

Pre wedding ceremony at station house

My dress would not stop creasing, which was a real shame. I spent ages the night before ironing it and look at it! Also not a budget part of the day, it wasn't really on for the price (and it was entirely man-made materials). So while I think you should think carefully about investing in a wedding dress, I think there may be some just-as-good bridesmaid options from the high street, so my advice would be to shop around. (I may just write a post on this some day - there's a few wedding themed posts I could write now so feel free to say if you'd be interested!)

Signing the register

B and I were the sole witnesses to the marriage registrar signing, which was really special :) Also, you can see my 60s-inspired do here, which was the very quick work of the hair stylist with no former planning/discussion, so hats off to her. Not my usual style, but it suited the day.

The blissfully happy couple

I just love the look on the groom's face here - I think this is what you'd call 'blissfully happy'?!

Irregular Choice Nick of Time shoes in ivory

Bark themed wedding cake

A family relative just happened to be an amazing cake-maker. I do wish I knew someone with such skills!

Station house reception

The day before the wedding, myself and a host of friends of the couple spent hours making the pom-poms you see hanging here and pinning up bunting and fairy lights. One of the bride's friends created all the signage, putting the boards into secondhand frames sourced cheaply - like the one at the front of the above pic.

The newlyweds on their maiden voyage

This might be my favourite picture of the two of them taking their maiden voyage as a newly-married couple.

A 60s updo for the bridesmaid

Yeah I know, really elegant, but it just happened to be a great shot of my hair. The irony is I didn't even finish that drink, although it looks like I'm downing it, as I'm still being very careful about how much wine I drink as it makes me so ill from so little.

Vintage suitcase card collection

Battered vintage suitcases are quite a popular choice for the card and gift collection these days and you can see why - totally gorgeous.

Wedding reception at a station house

The bride through the train window

We had a miracle with the weather - the day before was non-stop rain, as was the morning of the wedding. Then, just as we arrived, the heavens cleared and there was bright sunshine, just as the bride walked down the aisle to 'Here Comes the Sun' by The Beatles. And it meant this amazing photo could happen - stunning.

It also gave us the perfect backing track for the video B made. I cried at this video when I saw it and I'm not one to get teary at emotional stuff usually! He did a really fab job, for someone who'd never videoed a wedding before, don't you think? As when he usually makes these videos, he filmed on a camcorder and applied filters & super 8 effects afterwards. He's hoping to do more events in future, as he enjoyed putting this together so much, so if you're in the UK you know where to find us...

To explain the ending - B and I gave the couple a polaroid camera and photo album as a wedding present :)

So there we go, an utterly gorgeous wedding, pulled together by a lot of love, hard work and imagination. It also helped that the venue is new to the wedding scene so there was a big saving on the hire cost for that reason. What a find! It was the perfect day and I hope my own wedding next year is half as amazing!

  1. Oh my word, that's one amazing wedding video!! He did such an awesome job, honestly, there's a potential career change there if he wants it. I am feeling a bit teary, it's a good job I'm sat at a desk in a room on my own so nobody can question why I'm all emotional. Also, your photos are absolutely superb, that one of the bride through the rainy window. What a handsome couple they were, and to arrive by steam train?! Wah!! I also love your hair, you look beautiful too. This is such a wonderful blog post. And YES please to wedding related blog posts from you in the run up to your big day. Start early - I never did get around to posting about half the wedding stuff I planned to because it got a little manic in the lead up.

You're going to be such a beautiful bride yourself!!

    1. Yay, so glad B's video got that reaction from people who don't know them too! I keep telling him he's got a career in this too... Considering that was his first ever go at something like this! Have to hold my hands up that these aren't my photos, and I agree that the rainy window photo is stunning. It's also one of the bride's favourites :)

Ok good tip, if I start now I may get one or two up ;) I've got a couple of ideas although ironically the first one I was drafting in my head of advice for dress hunting doesn't now relate to what I've done for my dress at all...!

      You are so lovely xxx

  2. Oh wow, that video is stunning! If you hadn't told me, I would really have thought it was a nostalgic montage from a movie - hats off to B there! What a gorgeous wedding - the bride's dress is so beautiful and I'm so in love with your matching shoes. It looks like you had such a lovely time, and what a unique way to arrive at a wedding too!
Can't wait to see more about your own wedding now :D

    1. That's definitely high praise indeed :D The matching shoes are a particular favourite of mine too - because it was just me as the bridesmaid, it really helped tie our looks together, I think :)

Ok that's two votes for more wedding stuff from me... It's gonna happen! xx

  5. You friend did an amazing job with her wedding! I honestly love everything about this. I mean, a train? That's so cool! And her dress is perfect for showing off a really cute pair of shoes. So many sweet, fun little details, I'm sure it was a total blast.
I really dig the 60s hair on you, very Joan in the early seasons of Mad Men. It's a shame the dress was creasing so much, but the color is great. And B's movie was so lovely, I'm sure they're really happy to have such a great commemoration of the day.

    1. I know, it doesn't get much better than a steam train!!
I will take Joan any day of the week - one of my favourite ladies. I love the colour of the dress too - you don't see many bridesmaids in yellow. They love the video, which of course makes us both very happy (me in my minor role as creative director - we weren't expecting a boy to know all of the moments to capture!)

  7. Everything came together so beautifully, and extremely elegantly. All too often a vintage style wedding is overdone and loses its elegance- if you know what I mean. But this has remained subtle to the last with just the right balance of quirky details like the train, OMG! How cool is the train!. The video is hands down the best wedding video I have seen. So personal and intimate, capturing some really special moments. The camera always seems to be at the right place at the right time! B has such a skill there. And the editing with the filters and music are spot on. I'm in awe! Of course you look fabulous as well- but that's always a given sweetie, you are always sublime!

    1. Yes I think that's it - it can be a bit overdone or cliche, but she perfectly picked unique touches to give it a flair without overwhelming it. That's such a nice comment about the video - thanks so much! As I've said above, some of the camera being in the right place was down to me forcing B to capture moments he wasn't thinking of doing, but on the whole it's 85% him! It's not my usual look and I felt a bit self-conscious for that reason so it's really nice of you to say I look fab!

Oh! my romantic side came up when I watched the video.
    Amazing job to B!

I am sure your wedding will be full of small details.

Please, plan in advance, even for bad weather (wind or rain) and you won't feel under too much pressure the last few days before your wedding.

Good luck with buying the house and Stamp Duty, ouch!

And don't worry, I am planning almost entirely around the fact the weather is probably going to be rubbish. It's about what I expect from the British seaside!!

Thanks for the house luck - we finally have a completion date in sight so in a few weeks time I think it's possibly all going to be over... well, the spending money on stamp duty side of it at least!
