Outfit: birthday belle

So, just what do you wear for a special birthday? I didn’t have to think too long and hard on this one – in fact, I bought this dress in January. The blogger part of me struggled a little bit with my decision, because this dress has been around for years and consequently has shown up on many a blog so yeah, I’m a bit late to the party.
Ultimately, though, no other dress was going to do for three reasons 1) it’s in light blue and red, which is my favourite colour combination 2) the pattern is Eiffel Towers and anything that reminds me of my favourite city is wonderful in my eyes and 3) it’s a Bernie Dexter dress and I’ve never been able to justify the cost, shipping and customs charges, but always wanted to try one. From what I know of the real life Bernie, she’s pretty much exactly my height – so I had a hunch that the proportions and skirt lengths would fit me well, as she models all of her own products. It proved to be a good one; this dress fits as though it was actually made for me, I couldn’t be more pleased with it.
So I had the dress but that beautiful ruched, low-cut neckline needed a necklace. Not so easy – I searched for weeks and nothing was right. Then I stumbled on an adorable necklace on an Etsy shop’s Instagram feed – it was perfect; it had red Eiffel Towers dangling from it! But, woe, it had long gone out of stock. It was too late, I knew what I wanted, but no one sold anything like it. So, after a bit of thought I decided to use my new knowledge of jewellery making as acquired on my friend’s hen do in March and I bought the pieces to make what I wanted. Me? Making stuff I can actually wear? I really am an adult now…
Although not too much of an adult, having finally ticked something off my blogger bucket list – I’ve always wanted to pose with a bunch of balloons! Balloons that are highly co-ordinated with my outfit, of course. If you’re going to do a thing, do it right… I seemed to have a momentary memory lapse about the wind in this country though – all 6 balloons wasted no time beating me about the head.

I was so happy with this outfit – and no less than four separate strangers gave me compliments. That never happens! Even more amazingly, considering I’d potentially jinxed myself by buying a sundress for my birthday (on which it usually rains every year without fail), the sun actually did come out and stayed out all day. And for only the second time this year it was warm sun – ergo I didn’t freeze taking these photos. Hurrah!
Weather aside, the birthday itself wasn’t so bad, seeing as it featured a very special moment indeed…

I don’t know why the stone looks so blue here (it’s very clear in person), but anyway, it’s very pretty in real life and the boy did very good indeed and I’m not sure I could have done better myself 🙂 We don’t have a date yet but are going to be aiming for next summer, so watch this space as I’m sure it’s not the last you’ve heard…
All in all, turning 30 has been awesome. My murder mystery dinner party went off without a single hitch, despite how stressful and frantic the planning and execution was! Check out my Instagram to see my queenly costume…

Your birthday outfit is lovely! The colour combination is simply georgeous and your dress fits perfectly! Well done on your crafting success, I knew there was a secret crafter hiding inside of you 😉 Massive Congratulations on your engagement!!!

Is it crafting when you're simply collating pre-made materials… 😉 Thank you lovely x

Cute outfit! Now you just need the tickets to Paris to go with it!

Congratulations on your engagement too 🙂 Find/book your venue ASAP; the nicest ones book up fast.

I've got them! We're going to stay in Paris for a few nights in August 😀

Thanks for the congratulations – and yes, booking a venue up is stressing me out massively right now!

I love Paris. You'll have a fab time.

Perfect birthday outfit for you! I love the Bernie Dexter dresses but haven't ever tried one – I really must do one day as you look so stunning in this one. And the necklace (go you!) is the perfect finishing touch too 🙂
And congratulations!!! Eeee! I clicked through from Facebook to the post and was like, wait, did I just read that?! Then scrolled down excitedly 😀 The ring is gorgeous – looking forward to hearing more 🙂

I really love the cut of this one, it just fits and suits me so well 🙂
Thanks for the congratulations! And glad to add some excitement to your day 😉 I realise I probably should have told the proposal story now, but it isn't quite long enough to justify a whole blog post! xx

Aw this is the perfect outfit for a birthday girl! I love that you made the necklace, that's so clever. It looks like you had a really lovely warm and sunny day, but I did laugh about the wind and the balloons beating you on the head. The dress looks so incredibly pretty on you but now I'm glad I haven't bought a Bernie D myself, because I think it would be way too short on me. I should have worked that out really as I know Bernie is petite.

    Anyway, congratulations again!!
    xx

I had the perfect weather, really – for a spring day in this country, at least! Seriously there wasn't even a breeze and somehow the balloons still beat me in the head?! I think you're right on the Bernie styles, I don't think they're going to be your bag… xx

You look so pretty! Seriously, if you could see the face I'm making right now you'd laugh. Everything you're wearing is so perfectly suited to you, I don't think that you could have made a better choice for such a milestone. You're killing it at this being an adult thing – turning 30, getting engaged, buying a house. And you look gorgeous doing it.

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:07 pm

I was trying really hard to create my 'ultimate outfit' for this birthday – and I'm quite pleased that I seem to have pulled it off 😀 I definitely am adulting hard right now… and yet still finding time to waste lots of money on clothes, yep 😉

Happy Birthday and C0NGRATULATIONS! I love that you chose red for your accessories; it really pops against the colors of the dress.

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:08 pm

Thank you! I actually think this dress would look lovely with coral accessories too – might be something I try soon… Seeing as I can't seem to stop wearing it!

  9. May 10, 2016 / 1:47 pm

Congratulations – on your birthday and on your engagement!! You look divine in your birthday dress – the whole outfit is so you. The dress is perfect, but I also love the necklace, shoes and hair flower: the red is perfect, but they also all add that little bit more fun – just what you need on a special day. Beautiful. Congratulations for your engagement! your outfit is wonderful, you look gorgeous, the ring you received is really nice and in top of that, it did not rain! What more could you ask for? (well apart from winning the jack pot or the lotto).
As I said in my previous post about your birthday, lots of blessings!
Have a great week, stormy weather here but rather warm though 🙂

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:09 pm

Thanks Eva 🙂 and no, it didn't rain!! Can hardly believe it myself. I'm playing the Lotto, so surely I'm due a win soon?! The weather is truly rubbish here this week now, so I really was a very lucky girl!

You look so beautiful, love your shoes!! I'm so desperate for a pair of red shoes. I hope you had a lovely birthday! congratulations too, sounds like a perfect day! X

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:10 pm

It took me so long to find this pair – my feet are so narrow they had to have a strap, but I'm really fussy about where said strap is on the shoe… and thank you! x

  14. May 10, 2016 / 5:18 pm

First of all, you look amazing! Everything works together perfectly and that dress looks like it was made for you! I'm loving the balloons, you should use them more often, and you did a great job with the necklace, very unique. Your outfit posts always make me so jealous that I don't have your patience and attention to detail!
Secondly, a huge congratulations! Seems like you've had a great week! I'm looking forward to your wedding posts already!

Thank you 😀 and the balloons were such a faff to arrange but they really were fun to have around, apart from the head beating. I recommend it for special occasions! I think you're probably lacking my OCD obsessiveness, rather than patience and attention to detail, and there's definitely times it's more a curse than a blessing 😉 I'm sure there will be many wedding posts as there won't be anything else on my mind for a while…! x

  15. May 10, 2016 / 9:12 pm

Congratulations!!! Omg this Bernie Dexter dress is a dream on you, I love your outfit and amazing skills making that necklace! It's so nice shopping from Bernie (Besides the prices) but the fit is spot-on for us petite gals!! I Cant wait to hear more about your engagement!!

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:13 pm

Thank you! I'm glad I learned how to alter necklace chains because seriously I have bought so many necklaces I never wear because they're virtually on my bellybutton!

  16. May 11, 2016 / 1:01 am

Congratulations again!!! And omg that Bernie dress is so perfect on you and the necklace you made looks amazing! And why not get balloons for your birthday outfit blog post, you should carry them around all the time, they look so good hehe. Beautiful birthday girl x

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:14 pm

Thank you 🙂 I really wish the balloons hadn't been such a hassle because they really are an awesome accessory 😉 x

  17. May 11, 2016 / 1:49 am

Happy Birthday! Congratulations! Nice job on the necklace 🙂

    • May 11, 2016 / 12:14 pm
