Outfit: off to the boat races

My oh my, have I got a beautiful dress to show you all today! I’ve been really excited about the SS16 ranges generally, having previewed some at London Edge in February (mint green Hell Bunny bag, come to mama!), but one of the ranges I was really looking forward to launching was Voodoo Vixen’s. Over the past year or so I feel like their designs have gone from strength to strength and when I saw the previews for their summer range it was love at first sight. So many cute prints, so many unique dresses. In a now fairly saturated repro market, I felt like they’d found a way to push to the head of the pack this season.
And one of the reasons was this dress. Ok, so I’ve been looking for a nautical-themed something for a long while (my last post probably got that message across fairly bluntly), but it’s kind of hard to diverge from type with these kind of pieces. They’re often navy with white piping, they might feature stripes, they’ll likely have red or anchors on them somewhere… It’s easy to buy similar things from different brands, is what I’m getting at. But not this dress, this dress is something a bit different and it owes it all to this fantastic neckline.
This dress is girly, glamorous and one-of-a-kind. Yeah, I could do without a couple of inches on the hem (story of my 5’1″ life), but while with most longer dresses I’m straight to the tailor with them, I just didn’t want to have this one chopped because it felt like it’s meant to be this way… It’s probably the best quality piece of Voodoo Vixen’s I own; it’s lined and the fabric is a kind of crepe material and it all hangs precisely as it should. I have a (not particularly fluffy) petticoat on under it here, but it doesn’t look that different without it if I’m honest. Could certainly wear it both ways (it’s not meant to be a full circle skirt, it’s more of a 40s skirt shape).
When we took these photos, it was coincidentally the day of the Grand National over here (a huge annual horse race for anyone who doesn’t know), where traditionally female guests dress up in their finest to attend. As I was standing in front of the boats for these photos, I couldn’t help but think I looked like I should be watching a race of some kind… and that is no bad thing.

A very good start to the nautical collection, I think you’ll agree?

Oh this dress is charming! I wouldn't change the length either. Very feminine and pretty. I could see this working for garden parties, bbqs and lots if other occasions, the subtle nautical vibe makes it more versatile. Just lovely xx

I'd change the length on me, just a little, but I don't want to cut it up ๐Ÿ™‚ You'd look awesome in this dress! xx

Oh wow I love this dress, love the nautical pattern and that neckline…gorgeous! ๐Ÿ™‚

Beautiful dress! I hope no bloggers were harmed during the taking of the pictures for this post ๐Ÿ˜‰ it looks a bit chilly to me. Anyway, it does look amazing on you. I hope you'll get to enjoy with a little bit more sunny days. Have a great weekend! Eva (from Luxembourg/Germany)

Ha, it was absolutely freezing this day! Although the weird corn-beef leg effect I've got going on in these photos is a bit weird, as my legs don't really do that even when they're cold. I think it's to do more with the lighting… but yes, it was cold. But no harm done ๐Ÿ˜‰

What a beautiful dress! It looks perfect on you. The neckline of the dress is my favorite! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have had my eye on this dress since it first hit the site and it's so good to see it on you! That neckline is perfect and the length looks really lovely on you. Such a lovely dress – the heels, bag and hairflower compliment it really well too. So gorgeous x

    • April 21, 2016 / 12:15 pm

It really is the neckline that makes this dress something really special, but I do like the way it hangs too. It's just nice to see something that's not the typical nautical type ๐Ÿ™‚ Especially when it's this pretty! x

Your dress is absolutely divine, and I love every one of these photos! Kx

Thank you for saying as much – I was particularly pleased with this batch of photos! I always wonder if I include too many photos in my posts, so it's nice to hear that each one is appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚ x

Oh, you look so cute! Your makeup is perfect and I love how your hair looks very elegant, but simple at the same time. Works perfectly with your girly outfit.

That dress is also really pretty and the perfect length on you. If I wore the same dress, it would hit above my knees and therefore it would be too short to be "era-appropriate". ๐Ÿ™‚

    • April 21, 2016 / 12:17 pm

I was having a really good makeup day on this day, thanks for noticing ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hair is definitely simple – I'm not good at anything that requires too much expertise! Shame if this dress would be too short on you… In case it helps, my torso isn't actually too far below average, but my legs are where I'm lacking in inches, so where the waist hits me probably isn't too far off the mark, even if the skirt length is ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. April 21, 2016 / 10:38 pm

Oh, this is gorgeous! You really could wear it anywhere. I agree with everyone else – it's a perfect start to your collection! Did it take a lot of willpower not to load it down with a bunch of nautical-themed accessories? I know I would've been tempted…

What a fantastic dress! The ruffles! The print! I think it definitely looks very 30s – 40s, I absolutely adore it. I love those BAIT shoes with the dress too…you were so right when you said the folks at Zulily could go into retirement from us buying ALL THE SHOES lol. Have a wonderful weekend!

This whole outfit is loveliness personified – and expertly styled. What a dreamy, romantic, and completely gorgeous look. I'm wildly in love with the whole stylish kit and caboodle, sweet CiCi.

Oh my god! I love this nautical outfit post! You're definitely right about it not being the typical nautical themed dress, it looks so nice on you and the length doesn't look bad at all!

  12. April 22, 2016 / 1:41 pm

I definitely do agree – this looks so fabulous! I love the ruffles around the neckline and the unusual (and very pretty) print. I actually love the length too. I know mid-calf isn't always the best on more petite ladies, but it works so perfectly with this print. It's a glamorous, sweet take on nautical style, and I see why you were lusting after this dress so hard.

  13. April 22, 2016 / 2:34 pm

I know what you mean about nautical dresses usually being super similar and agree this dress is both unique and a stunner! The ruffles at the neck are just beautiful and the longer than usual hem is very elegant. Great photos, and what a fun backdrop for this ensemble ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. April 22, 2016 / 5:50 pm

From far away or from a quick glance, this dress almost seems black and white but I love that it's actually a deep blue! What a lovely detail!

  15. April 22, 2016 / 10:01 pm

Such a pretty neckline. This dress is so soft and feminine and really sweet on you. Such a fabulous nautical look!

Such a beautiful dress! It suits you so well. I'm totally obsessed with the maritime look currently. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. April 25, 2016 / 5:30 pm

So cute on you! I love the neckline and print and I completely agree with you that the hem looks like it was meant to be that length! Just perfect on you!

  19. April 28, 2016 / 1:09 pm

A good start indeed! That's a really sweet look, and I like the length on you.

  20. May 5, 2016 / 1:42 am

Oh, I agree with you about this one being something special! I love the cream fabric with the navy print, and that neckline is darling. I also think the skirt length looks really nice on you! It's a really pretty dress. โค
