Outfit: re-mixing the rose skirt (and some hindsight)

So, the last time you saw this skirt it was being used in my Back to the Future costume. But of course, it was never intended to just be fancy-dress! Far too pretty for that.
I actually wore it again immediately after that adventure – photographed it, then did that thing I like doing of not posting the photos for over a year because the weather didn’t feel appropriate at the time (like it matters!). It’s funny how looking at these images now I pick up a few things e.g. that my lens was poorer, that I hadn’t yet learnt to appreciate a petticoat and that I was much less confident in front of the camera. I also don’t know if I’d wear this exact outfit again now, a year later…
They say hindsight is a marvellous thing, but writing this blog I feel all it ever does is make me question every choice I ever make – well, at least, aesthetically speaking! I’ve never scrutinised myself in the way I do now. Sometimes it’s a positive experience, but it can be very demoralising too. Particularly if you wear an outfit that you think looks great, until you see the photos and are suddenly looking at 100+ pictures of your fabulous muffin top that you had no idea was even there. And then you realise you just didn’t notice it in the mirror and it’s been there all day long – and if you didn’t see that, what else did you miss?! I’ve seen other bloggers talk about the fact that outfits can look different in the mirror vs on the camera too and I think there’s some truth in that because of the whole 3D vs 2D flattening thing that photos do… But as much as you know that, it doesn’t stop you seeing a bad photo and thinking you must just look terrible in life generally.
Anyway, that all got a bit reflective. Back to the outfit – essentially, there’s nothing wrong with this ensemble – it’s cute! It’s just very CiCi Marie 2014, in hindsight… although the muffin top, thankfully, wasn’t in sight. (The weird arm skin was though.)

I love this skirt – I still kind of regret not getting the dress version and have only stopped myself from getting anything by HB in this print because I have too much stuff with roses as it is πŸ˜›

    • August 17, 2015 / 12:07 pm

Ah, the dress and skirt are still floating around out there… there's time πŸ™‚

  2. August 16, 2015 / 1:26 pm

Very pretty print on the skirt. I think you are being rather hard on yourself here! You do not have weird arm skin!! That did make me giggle though, it is amazing what we can see in our photos that no one else ever would!

    • August 17, 2015 / 12:07 pm

You should see the arm skin in the photos I *didn't* use. I don't have flabby arms, so why does it happen?! You're very right that we see things in our photos that no one else would, but I guess it's because so many of us are naturally hard on ourselves..!

  3. August 16, 2015 / 5:21 pm

Adore adore!! I don't often bin pictures but when I first started blogging it was indeed a problem. I think it does take practise to be aware of what could be a problem in an outfit! Sometimes before taking pictures I'd tell the husband to make sure to keep an eye on one part of the outfit because I knew it was problematic when I wear it?

    • August 17, 2015 / 12:09 pm

Ha this made me smile – the amount of times B is told to watch some part of what I'm wearing like a hawk for the moment it moves out of place! And yet I still end up with tonnes of photos with a waist belt that's nowhere near the waistband of my skirt…

  4. August 16, 2015 / 6:43 pm

    Very Beautiful! πŸ™‚

  5. August 16, 2015 / 11:51 pm

I think the outfit is gorgeous – I really love that skirt! (And am once again questioning why on earth I don't own a Hell Bunny skirt?!) I SO know what you mean about photos, though – I've just once again looked back at outfit photos in which my dress looks so creased you'd think I'd just picked it up off the floor or something – I'd only had it on for around 30 minutes before the photos were taken, too, so I'm now totally mortified to think I walked around like that and didn't realise πŸ™

    • August 17, 2015 / 12:11 pm

Considering you're the queen of the Paloma cardigan, it is indeed a mystery πŸ˜‰ Argh, creases!! I had the exact same problem just at the weekend and the annoying thing was I'd spent five solid minutes of ironing moments before I snapped the photos (that were literally taken 20 seconds from my front door). Why, fashion gods, why?! Some clothes just get creased as soon as you look at them.

I think you are over thinking it! This outfit looks awesome on you and is still stylistically relevant after a year. I love this pretty skirt and the top you paired with it. You look fantastic!

I think I probably am too πŸ™‚ thank you!

I'm mostly impressed by your planning skills if you get enough photos to not need to post something for over year. (Did that sentence make sense? I hope it did.) Love the skirt, and I think the blush pink top works really well with it. And I don't see any weird arm skin, for what it's worth.

    • August 17, 2015 / 12:15 pm

Would we call it planning when I end up with stuff I don't use for a year πŸ˜‰ I've still posted loads inbetween that are way more recent! I think I'm the only one that ever sees the weird arm skin, which I have to say I'm relieved about πŸ˜€

Thank you for sharing some of your thoughts on hindsight (along with this entirely pretty outfit) with us. Our choices are the building blocks of our lives. We might not have always arranged them the say way if we could go back in time, but we wouldn't have the present, as it exists now without them, and ultimately that overshadows a questionable outfit, camera shyness, or any other element of that nature hands down, if you ask me.

I can kind of relate to your thoughts. The blog does indeed make me think more about every outfit, the right lip color choice, accessorise more, etc.
Nevertheless, I think the outfit looks fabulous on you, even though, from my point of view, your style did change (of should I say broadened?)
Anyway, it is beautiful as always! πŸ™‚

Wow…really refreshing post! I'm so glad you posted/I read this now as opposed to two months before or down the line. I'm going through an insecure phase a bit in that the gruel of constantly looking at myself in in photos and such is starting to play mind games with me. I also super related to outfits not translating on film, and how every few months something gets upped for my blog, whether it's the writing, photography, or putting together outfits. That's mostly fun to look back on and see the progress, but is kind of weird too. Thank you so much for sharing and your candidness! XOXO

Sad to hear you're in an insecure phase – but I know exactly what you mean by that. I don't think anyone understands what it's like to look at endless photos of yourself week in and out unless they've done it – it can be a real downer sometimes. But it will be temporary – you'll be fine πŸ™‚ And I'm glad if I can help anyone feel even a little bit better! xx

Your blog really hit home….being a fellow blogger, and being very self aware ( unfortunately) of my perceived flaws, and being an older woman that is still a retrophile and pin up girl I go through exactly what you are on a daily basis when I go through my photos. It is hard. There are days….

That being said…beautiful photos.. love the skirt so much and the outfit is lovely as a whole. You always inspire me style wise and I love your blog and Instagram feed.

I totally relate to you here! I made a beautiful dress recently and when I saw the pictures all I could see was back fat! I hadn't even realised it was there until I saw the pictures. Then me pushing my partner to choose the least noticeable picture, he was totally stuck, if he agrees he sees it, big mistake, if he doesn't help then he's just being unhelpful! Im totally relieved that im not the only one!

    • August 26, 2015 / 12:23 pm

If there's something you can rely on, it's that any outfit malfunction you do have will show up x20 in a photo! And yes, our poor partners are rather in a bind with trying to help us with these things… I tend to give B a list of things he needs to watch for, but that's not foolproof!

  14. August 29, 2015 / 1:38 am

I love this skirt! So pretty even without a petticoat! Also, it is so true about things looking different in a pictures vs in real life. I have a couple dresses that when I put them on they feel great and looking in the mirror they look great to me but looking at the picture they seem a little off. Makes me wonder though what the true perspective be, someone looking at it in real life.

  15. August 30, 2015 / 11:54 am

This is such a lovely set of pictures and you look positively stunning, despite what you say. I'm sorry to hear you taking an unflattering view of yourself. My advice for what it's worth, is to be appreciative of what you have, and take a more realistic and positive view of yourself. Worrying about tiny image issues is a waste of time, and in the bigger scheme of things, you've got lots to be thankful for. πŸ™‚
