Outfit: the holiday skirt en vacance

I’m back from my mini-break on the UK coast and all I can say is: congratulations, me, on picking the worst few days of summer to have a holiday in this country. After five days of wearing wellies just to pop out for lunch, I couldn’t be more sick of water (and my old arch nemesis, The Wind)! Ok, the wellies were new, leopard print, and had little heels, and yes, I did buy them specifically for the awful weather forecast so a part of me was pleased… But I’d have traded them for a day of sunshine – and I love new shoes.
Anyway, while I pray for summer to return, now’s a good time to remember when I did experience fantastic holiday weather. If you read my photo diary of my Marseille trip, you might have already guessed that after the ‘Audrey Hepburn on holiday’ look (thanks again, Bonita!), the one with The Skirt was going to be the other outfit I spent some time snapping for your viewing pleasure.
It wasn’t much for my pleasure, that’s for sure, as this was one of those times that taking photos of me was just proving to be the worst idea anyone has ever had. We couldn’t get the lighting right for ages (it still didn’t end up great) and the wind was so relentless for a moment I thought I’d never left the UK. (Although without the winter temperatures I’ve been enjoying this week.)
And then you add a boater hat into the mix. I think the maximum amount of time my hand left my head all day, when totaled up, is probably about 15 minutes. I pinned the hat using a kirby grip (bobby pin) to the back of my head, but couldn’t get the same miracle to work on the front. So it wasn’t going anywhere, but it was still desperately trying to fly back off my head nonetheless. Is there a way to get boater hats to feel secure, or is the idea you don’t actually wear them on boats near the windy sea? Maybe mine wasn’t tight enough or I was wearing it too far back off my head but… fashion.
Anyway, you all knew a post with this skirt was coming and I had the most fun thinking up what to wear with it to show it off. I also knew exactly where I wanted to take these photos and it wasn’t where the first few shots are… We went down to Cassis to visit the port and the calanques as I’ve already mentioned, but the port was super busy, ridiculously windy and there was no shade to be found anywhere. I’m all for standing in direct sunlight, but my camera isn’t that great with it. In that its owner has not found a way to stop photos from coming out really bleached and with half of herself in total shadow (the British constant cloud cover had its uses for blogging, let it be said). So I’ve thrown some token ‘riviera’ shots in at the end just to prove my good intentions (and how blinding the sun was – oh for a blinding sun again!) πŸ˜€

Oh dear I feel your pain about the weather lately!! It's been so Autumnal, I've been in wool jumper and boots and tights since the weekend, today I'm braving a dress but with leggings and a cardi. There's a slight bit of sun coming out just now, so I might nip to the shop in between showers.

Well this is a gorgeous outfit, pleased to see more of it. Have you tried using old fashioned hat pins, or an elastic that goes under your hair at the nape of your neck? A bit child-like, but it works! That bag is rather super too, I've had my eye on a few things from Top Vintage but have never taken the plunge.

Finally, those shoes – I recently picked up the green printed version brand new off Ebay, and am really chuffed!

Hope you're having a good week now you're back off hols. I'm entering the stage of hectic, that seems to be like a hamster on a wheel!!

    • July 29, 2015 / 12:27 pm

I was in several layers at all times over the last few days! It's seriously rubbish.

I wasn't sure if hat pins would damage the super-fine weaving of the straw (even more than I did with a kirby grip, heh)… Or how I'd attach an elastic. But to be honest I didn't realise how unstable it was until I put it on that morning or I could have looked into either of those things! Oh well, for next year…

I love the green version of these shoes – the pattern is fab! Pleased you got some; they're super comfortable.

Not surprised you're hectic, the big day is getting really close now πŸ˜€ xx

Girl, the lighting in these photos is so dreamy and your hat and hair look so immaculate that you could not tell one bit that you had to battle the wind to get these shots! I love the spot you've picked in these photos, such a gorgeous place – I love going on holiday and finding new spots for blog photos πŸ˜€

    • July 29, 2015 / 12:51 pm

I took about 300 photos to get these – you're not seeing the windy ones here πŸ˜€ Glad you think the spot worked regardless – it was the first not overly crowded place we found that was still somewhat pretty. I do really like finding new spots too, but some days it feels really stressful – this was one of those days!

  3. July 29, 2015 / 1:13 pm

Well, all the drama aside, the photos look great!! What an adorable outfit. I totally feel you, though, on your challenges. I hate the days when taking photos surely seems "not meant to be." How frustrating! Glad you powered through – and survived the getaway!! πŸ˜‰

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:34 pm

It's frustrating when you've got yourself all prepared – spent a while on your hair and make-up usually, in my case – and then the technology or weather throws a spanner in the works. I hate trying to shoot the same outfit twice – I'm always convinced something isn't as good as the first time!

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:35 pm

The skirt really is something special – one of my favourite buys this year πŸ™‚

  4. July 29, 2015 / 2:31 pm

I think you look beautiful. I'm in serious like over that skirt..the whole outfit really. You pulled off a not so great picture taking day to look absolutely flawless. πŸ™‚

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:35 pm

Thank you! I still look at these photos and frown because they're not as good as I imagined, but I do realise I'm a ridiculous perfectionist and I'm not working for a magazine, so it's probably my problem and no one else's πŸ˜‰

  5. July 29, 2015 / 5:06 pm

Your photos remind me that I need a holiday. Or just sun. Or I should just move back πŸ™

Anyway I think the idea of a hat pin is best! If there is a bit of lining inside you can pin a hat pin and you can have bobby pins to secure the hat pin. Hope that makes sense!

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:37 pm

Ha, Nora, you only just got here!! This is a really disappointing summer though – it was off to a promising start and whatever this is now; what a let-down. That's often what we're contending with here though unfortunately πŸ™ Summer is no guarantee of good weather in this country!

I think there is a tiny strip of lining if I remember rightly, so I clearly have to look into this hat pin malarkey!

  6. July 29, 2015 / 5:22 pm

I really feel your pain with the photos (although you really can't tell yours were remotely difficult to shoot!) – I've been seriously considering just starting to take all of mine indoors, because it's just too difficult to find a gap in the rain these days – and don't even get me started on the wind! These turned out gorgeous, though – such a stunning location and an excellent pairing of skirt and top, too!

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:38 pm

If I had a location in my house that wasn't full of clutter (well, shoes mainly, as I've got no storage for them!) I would totally take more inside. I really don't have a single bare wall to stand in front of though where I can get a camera in front of it. So I have to keep battling with ridiculous weather all the darn time! Honestly I think you should just do yours indoors if you can!!

  7. July 29, 2015 / 5:25 pm

That coastline is seriously breathtaking! Wow! I need to add this region to my travel wishlist! This skirt is just so adorable, and you styled it perfectly. Though the photos may have turned into a bit of a chore in the wind, they look really great!

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:40 pm

Ah thank you πŸ™‚ I do recommend Marseille and Cassis as travel destinations!

  8. July 29, 2015 / 6:54 pm

I love that skirt! We had a ton of flooding here in the spring so I understand. Now it's very hot and humid. Ready for some more mild seater.

  9. July 29, 2015 / 7:23 pm

I think I am just totally envious of your ability to put outfits together I have not got the eye!

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:42 pm

Of course you have!! I'm just OCD about matching πŸ˜€

  10. July 30, 2015 / 6:35 am

Oh no, that's rough! We had similar luck with our two weeks on Vancouver Island last year (rain, rain and more rain! But it was still an amazing time, don't get me wrong).

Interestingly, we've been having somewhat cooler temps here lately, too. Today was the first day in over a week that felt like the usual July temps around here. Weird for this part of the world, I tell you!

This is such a fabulously pretty vacay outfit! I love that shade of cheerful, buttery yellow. It suits summer and holidays both so well – and what dazzling scenery to pose with.

    Tons of hugs,
    β™₯ Jessica

    • July 30, 2015 / 12:44 pm

It's annoying when holiday is so precious and you feel like you've timed it badly… but I still had a good break and to be fair in this country the weather is bad most of the time. Or at least, a lot of bad is thrown in with the good!

I love the yellow too – it's the first yellow top I've owned and I don't know what took me so long! x

  11. July 31, 2015 / 1:04 am

I feel like I'm a bit repetitive with my comments, but sometimes the only thing to say is oh my god you are so freaking cute. Lovely outfit – the off the shoulder top, the pretty printed skirt, the touches of black to offset the sweetness just a little bit. Perfection.
Boaters are so tricky! I use hat pins pretty much any time I wear a hat, but they tend to look a little odd when you can't hide them a little bit. I think with a boater, you kind of have to wear it straight so that it sits flat on your head. I've seen my boyfriend ride his bike (rather fast, at that) with a boater on his head, so it can be done!

    • August 1, 2015 / 8:23 am

I don't think anyone minds repetitive compliments πŸ˜‰ I always feel extra pleased if you like my outfits, actually, as I feel like you're one of the more creative fashion bloggers I follow πŸ™‚

Hmm… either I get a pin to work or it's bye bye boater I think – wearing it flat on my head looked so stupid!!

  12. August 1, 2015 / 11:24 am

I feel your pain with difficult photo shoots and boaters that won't behave. I always like to wear mine tipped on the back of my head, and hate when it feels like it's just about to blow away! I'm going to have try something different to secure mine this summer.

And your photos did turn out gorgeously even with the lighting and wind troubles. There is nothing worse than getting all set up to take photos only to realise for whatever reason they aren't working. Good job in pulling through! ❀

If you figure it out, let me know!

It's always a good thing I don't have to show you all the 290 shots that didn't work out πŸ˜‰ But the fact I persevered and everyone seems to like them makes it worth the hassle πŸ™‚ xx

  13. August 2, 2015 / 8:41 am

I still can't believe that this skirt is from Asda! It is the perfect portrayal of summer! Please sun shine, come back, I'm not done with summer yet!

  14. August 6, 2015 / 4:21 pm

Love this skirt so much! This entire look is amazing. So cute with the straw hat you paired it with! <3

  15. August 12, 2015 / 4:32 pm

This skirt is perfect on you! Looks like we both had the same idea to take them to sunnier climes! I took my dress to Italy so I'll have a post with mine too soon x

  16. August 18, 2015 / 10:26 pm

I do like the print on that skirt, it is so pretty. Such a good find. You might have had difficulties getting the photos you wanted but I think they have worked so well.
