Makeup: Mac Chili lipstick - an autumn/winter matte

It's been a while since I introduced you to another lipstick from my collection - you may have thought there couldn't possibly be any more, but it's quite amazing how many red lipsticks one woman can have. When you wear reds as often as I do, you become hyper aware of the very subtle differences between each colour, which completely justifies owning a ridiculous number of them, of course (of course). This is partly why I wrote a list of my top 5s a while back (before I'd got a decent camera, apologies) - and yes, this was one of them, but I've never shown you it properly so here it is.

And now's the best time for it, as it really works well with the darker colours of cold-weather clothes; it's essentially a brown red. I actually think it's perhaps even slightly browner than these photos came out, but this is pretty accurate as to how it looks on me. I'm not sure it's going to be a colour for everyone, but if you've got warm tones to your skin or hair it might be worth a go if you fancy a change from a standard postbox red. I don't know about you, but sometimes I just feel a bit more brown than red... Which might be something to do with the copious amounts of leopard print I wear!

Pros
  • Unique, pigmented colour - what Mac are good for!
  • Truly matte
  • Not the most expensive lipstick out there
  • A great twist on a classic red lip
Cons
  • Very drying, needs a primer underneath
  • It's not going to suit everyone, you definitely need some warmth in your colouring because of the brown undertones
  • Casing - I'm always keen to point out I don't like the Mac tubes because they're identical and the names of the colours rub off...

And while I'm here, I did my first ever guest blog recently on the topic of buying shoes for awkward feet. If yours are half-sized or narrow like mine, you might be interested to read my ramblings on the subject over at Shoeperwoman.

    1. Thank you! :) my hair is easy to describe in terms of the cut - it's long and all one length apart from the fringe (and some weird little bits of hair that never grow past chin length)! I've been thinking I may branch out into some hair tutorials - I've done a couple in the past on someone else, but now I've got a helper to take the photos for me... I shall keep pondering it. The problem is that my hairstyles are never consistent, sometimes the same methods result in a total mess :D

  2. Smashing colour on you! I have some brown-orange lippys, but don't think I have a brown-red one, so thanks for the tip. I understand completely about the subtle differences between lippy colours. I've been looking for the perfect raspberry pink lipstick for years, and still haven't found it! The hunt continues.... x

  3. Super lovely shade. I reach for darker lipsticks the overwhelming majority of the time during the chilly months. They just seem to suit the darker, heavier garments and general vibe of the season so appealingly well.

And may I add, lovely lady, how immensely pretty your lip shape is. I've long admired it in your outfit photos.

*PS* Many happy congrats on your first guest post!

  6. such a beautiful shade!!! I totally agree with you on the point that once you are very much into red lips you can point out the subtle differences in all shades of red! I would love to add this in my collection....it looks fabulous on you!!

  9. This is a really pretty brick red! I'm with you with the subtle differences between red lipsticks. I have a really neutral undertone so I basically wear all shades of red. I have a red that's similar to this and you've reminded me I need to wear it again soon!

    1. The weird thing is how they can look identical in the tube and then still completely different on! Glad I've inspired you to take yours up again :)

  10. i love that colour, it really suites you. I don't know if it would suit me - i usually go for more muted, rose based reds but i have been branching out and may try this colour!

  11. Sometimes I just can't get over how pretty you are. Seriously.
Love this lip color. I used to stick exclusively to cooler toned colors - any reds had to be very blue - but lately I've been really digging warmer toned lipsticks. I get a very similar color by using a nude brown lip liner under a sheer red, and I love it. I might have to check this color out, I love the texture and the shade. Thanks for another awesome recommendation!
    Cheers,

    1. Aw, Jessica!! As I always say to you, you don't see the 105 photos I didn't use ;) I definitely have a 'good side'!

Funny you should say that about cool tones - I've done the absolute reverse. I always bought everything warm toned thinking blue didn't suit me, but recently I've realised this isn't necessarily accurate. A bit of blue is fine. I think people are much more 'neutral toned' than they realise - I think this whole thing of you're either warm or cool toned is a bit of a myth the beauty industry created... at least in as much as you have to stick to one set of colours over another...
