Outfit: crop tops + high-waisted jeans

So, the crop top's back. Some of us hoped we'd seen the last of all that at a school disco c.1998... (showing my age!). The irony is that back the first time around, my lovely flat midriff was hidden under a layer of puppy fat and now the crop's returned, there's a danger I'm a bit too old for all this nonsense (and I certainly don't have the washboard abs thing going on this time either).

But there's such nice short styles out there I thought I'd give it a go, borrowing a leaf out of the 50's book and styling one with a high-waist, thus reducing the amount of tummy that can actually escape. I deliberately started with a cheap top in case it all turned out to be a very bad idea (!).

Sitting down, it kind of looks like a normal length top, but when I stood up you could see the difference.

Sunglasses: New Look
Top: ASOS
Jeans: ASOS (Petite, 'Rivington')
Belt: vintage
Shoes: Clarks (old, but still found on eBay)
Lipstick: Boots No7 Stay Perfect in Gay Geranium

I'd have quite liked a slightly higher waist on the jeans to feel more comfortable about how much middle was on display (although the first full-length shot above is a bit misleading because of how I'm standing, they come up a little bit higher than this). But it's worth noting I really quite like them and they were pretty cheap for the quality - not to mention the style comes in lots of different colours. I liked this pair because they have the 5-pocket jeans detailing, but technically ASOS classes them as jeggings (I've never been clear on the distinction). One bad thing about them though - they are leaking inky blue dye like crazy and have dyed my ankles, thighs, fingertips (!) and half of one of my favourite bags. Tut tut, ASOS.

I had to include this shot, it would have been rude not to with this bird posing so nicely.

What do you think of crop tops - could us vintage style lovers be embracing them more? Personally, I've got my eye on a lovely bardot design with a kitsch lemon print at ASOS...

  1. I've just bought some little crop tops just like yours from H&M, to wear with high waisted shorts and skirts! Great minds think alike, I think lots of people have realised that using high waisted items on your bottom half makes a crop wearable, I've seen 'One Chic Mom' do this well. Shame about the colour leakage, that would drive me crazy! I'd contact their customer services and complain! x

    1. I somehow didn't think I'd be the first to think of it! It actually makes wearing high-waisted stuff a little bit easier, as you're not forever tucking things in and worrying about how they bulge right back out again..! Good point about complaining to ASOS, this kind of thing doesn't cross my mind nearly as often as it should. And it really should when clothes vouchers could be the reward for the effort... x

  2. I'm afraid the white wedges I've featured in my latest post are years old, from Faith. Dune tend to trot out a similar style most years, try searching Ebay if they haven't any in store. Good luck with the Asos complaint!! x

  3. This looks lovely on you! High waisted, ankle length pants with a crop top is one of my favorite summer looks, and I've been searching high and low for a pair of pants that will actually fit me.
I have discovered a surprisingly love to crop tops, especially with high waisted skirts. I don't feel nearly as overexposed as I expected to, and the way it hits the sweet spot on my upper abs has the added bonus of making me look way fitter than I actually am.

    1. I think I'm converted, I have to say! High-waisted enough and you wouldn't even have any skin poking out I'm sure... and you're right that they often end at the smallest part of you - veeeery handy indeed ;)

  4. You can never be too old for a crop top as long as you wear it the "classy" way. Of course, you pulled this off perfectly. I love this simple yet romantic outfit. You look so cute!

  6. Pff! You totally rock the crop top CC. I don't think anyone's ever too old to wear anything they want, as long as they can pull it off. i like the high waist denim too!

  7. Great outfit! I'm a huge crop top fan, but again I don't have the flattest of stomachs, so anything high-waisted is my best friend ;)

    1. They have so many colours to choose from! I actually wasted a good 30 minutes before deciding on this mint one - purely because I don't have another top in this colour in my wardrobe. But I'm glad I did, it's so summery :) x
